Spanish Language playgroup chiquitines reopens its doors

5 June 2026 marks the beginning of a new era for this beloved and joyful playgroup, which officially began in May 1999 with a handful of native Spanish-speaking migrant mothers wanting to pass on their language and culture to their children. Over the years, the playgroup flourished, and a Kinder, a Dance Group, and Cultural Workshops grew from that initial impulse.

Fast-forward one complete generation, and this new iteration will now be attended by the grandchildren of the original founders and their friends. The playgroup is inclusive and open to all families — whether or not they have a Spanish-speaking background. Families with an interest in the Spanish language and Ibero-American cultures are warmly welcome to join with their children, accompanied by parents, guardians, or grandparents.

Sessions are joyful and led by a qualified native Spanish speaker with extensive experience in the field. Participants will enjoy songs, storytelling, child-friendly craft activities, free play, and nature time, both indoors and outdoors, in a screen-free environment.

Practically speaking, Chiquitines Playgroup is much more than its name suggests. It is:

• An effective starting point for new migrant families with young children to build community and establish themselves in Victoria

We meet on Friday mornings in Mitcham from 10am to 12pm in a warm and child-friendly environment.
